The agricultural sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia constitutes a basic pillar of the national economy and an important tributary of food security. The Kingdom has been keen to preserve its water resources, of which the agricultural sector depletes a large part. Hence, it became necessary to reconsider the agricultural development strategy, taking into account the importance of national food security.
King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology has worked with the concerned authorities to develop agricultural policies that contribute to the optimal consumption of water in the agricultural sector. It has also supported research related to the transfer, localization and development of competitive, environment-friendly agricultural technologies to serve sustainable agricultural development, and to support the Saudi agricultural economy to continue providing diverse food sources. ; And this is done through: producing barley fodder with high productivity and quality, limited water consumption through hydroponics and textile farming techniques, producing strains of crops with high productivity and quality, and limited water consumption through genetic techniques, and also launched a food security program through agricultural techniques in the regions desert; With the aim of developing agricultural technologies that achieve sustainable food security and economic development for the Kingdom in cooperation with a number of government agencies, universities and agricultural companies. KACST was also keen to develop and support national capacities in the field of research to serve the agricultural sector in the Kingdom.
