Palm business
1. Control of red weevil and mealybug in palm trees
How to treat date palms from the red weevil using aluminum phosphide:
The work is implemented in accordance with the special protocols and the procedural guide for the integrated management of the red palm weevil insect and under the supervision of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
Implementation steps:
1- Placing warning signs at the entrance to the farm and at the treatment area not to approach.
2- Pruning trees prepared for fumigation, removing offshoots, weeds, and any protrusions that may lead to tearing or puncturing the prosthesis around the main trunk.
3- Measure the circumference of the palm tree at the level of the soil surface and at a height of 1.5 m, to determine the appropriate width of the suit.
4- Determine the location of the injury on the trunk of the tree to be fumigated and measure the height of the injury site above the soil surface to determine the appropriate length of the prosthesis.
5- Determine the heights for installing the sponge pieces, as follows:
- In palm trees, in which the site of infection is less than one meter, one piece of sponge can be sufficient to be placed in the upper part, and the lower part of the prosthesis should be buried in the soil and the soil around it should be carefully compacted.
- In palm trees where the injury site is from (1) meters or more, two pieces of sponge can be installed, one below the injury site and the other above the injury site.
- Make five holes with a depth of about 12 cm at least (so that the end of the hole reaches the inner wood). He also warns that it is not recommended to dig in the root zone, and he is keen to maintain the diameter of the tunnel -2 cm by not moving the drill inside the tunnels, then they are cleaned after drilling.
- And the hole is slightly inclined to the bottom, the distribution of the five holes is as follows
- The first puncture is in the middle of the injury area.
- Cut the second puncture 20-25 cm above the injury site to the iliac fossa.
- The fourth hole is at the back of the injury, slightly above it and to the right.
- The fifth hole is at the back of the injury, slightly below it and to the left.
- Mark holes for easy locating when placing aluminum phosphide discs.
- Starting to install the upper sponge piece, then the lower one, and it is fixed after wrapping it around the trunk of the palm tree with a thread.
- After wrapping the sponge piece on top around the perimeter of the trunk and making sure to cut off the extra part from the circumference, it is fixed around the trunk using thin plastic threads.
- The work is done in the same way to install the lower foam piece.
- Dressing the suit (jacket) and starting from the upper part so that it covers the entire upper sponge belt with a part of the zipper closed until before the upper hole, then the tension belt is placed so that the tension is in the middle of the sponge piece with strong tension using a belt tensioning machine to prevent the exit of phosphine gas.
- Adjusting the position of the suit (jacket) so that it is ready to be closed by the zipper, and making sure that it is securely placed around the perimeter of the torso.
- Ensure that the specialized technician is ready in terms of public safety clothing, so that he opens the aluminum phosphide package, takes out (5) tablets, and then closes the package directly. Then a disc of aluminum phosphide was inserted into each of the clearly marked and pre-prepared holes.
- Direct closing of the holes after placing the discs using pre-prepared sand paste.
- Closing the zipper of the suit (jacket) to its end accurately and at a high speed.
- Tightening the lower tension belt, so that the tension is in the middle of the lower sponge piece with strong tension using a belt tensioning machine. The process of sealing the suit is carried out quickly after placing the discs.
- In the event that the jacket reaches the ground level, the lower end of the suit should be buried in the soil and the soil should be compacted well around the suit to ensure that no gas leaks.
- Affix a data plate (warning sticker specifications are given below) to the outside of the suit on the trunk of the affected palm.
- A phosphine gas reading device is used (after one hour and after 24 hours of covering the suit) to ensure that there is no phosphine gas leakage. The device is passed on all parts of the suit, especially from the top of the upper tension belt, from the lower area of the suit and along the zipper. If the device records any reading, it is Deal with the leak as follows
- If the leakage is from the top or bottom of the suit, either from above the upper foam or from below the lower foam, the tension belt should be tightened more tightly.
- If the gas leak is through a hole in the suit, a piece of wide adhesive tape can be placed to close the hole well.
T- If there is a gas leak from the cloud area, a piece of adhesive tape can be placed.
- Instructing the farmer to avoid irrigating the treated trees for a period of three days from the date of the treatment.
- Removing the suit after 4-5 days, provided that the technician who will do this is equipped with all general safety clothing for using phosphine gas.
